Welcome to my world

In 2001, while I was working as a producer and sound engineer there, BBC Radio 1 hired me to help develop a new service for aspiring musicians and DJs. I set about recruiting a panel of target users to help shape what we were making. No one asked me to do that, it just made sense.

2 years later I found out that I’d independently invented my own UX design process and what I’d been doing was user-centred service design. And I’ve been doing it ever since.

Over time I’ve grown my skillset through experience and self-driven learning, building up a toolbox of research, analysis, design and delivery techniques & tricks.

I’ve obtained formal qualifications in project management methods, and my techincal background means I have a broad set of skills I can use to bring together users, stakeholders and project teams.

If you’re after a unicorn UI/UX designer, I’m not it. If you’re after a versatile product designer and manager who can gather and wrangle requirements, run complex delivery projects, manage products long-term, grow your department and above all, focus on delivering maximum value to you and your clients then please read on.

Design Operations

I’m always trying to strike a balance when it comes to process. Too little and it’s chaos. Too much can stifle innovation and creativity. Here’s how I try to do that

Storytelling

How I use the transferrable skills from my days as a content creator to help with RFP responses and documenting workshops & research

A brief work history

I pride myself on adapability - I think of all my skills as transferrable and I enjoy sector-hopping and finding out about the quirky things that go on behind the scenes of hospitality bookings or artificial limb sales.

As a proud generalist, I’ve created B2B and B2C products across web, native mobile, voice and OTT in sectors including media, automotive, FMCG, finance, travel and pharma.

I do have my go-to design processes and models. I’m a big fan of Information Foraging and Jobs to be Done, for example. But I also enjoy reading around and squirrelling away useful things for later.

I really I love that lateral moment when a thing I learned in one place suddenly pops into mind as the solution to a seemingly unrelated problem.
